Is there a job that combines counterterrorism, intelligence, and research into one?

Please look at information on our Civil Service opportunities (under the "WORK" tab at our website) to see if there is something that would interest you. You may, in particular, find opportunities with INR (Bureau of Intelligence and Research) to be of particular interest. INR's primary mission is to harness intelligence to serve U.S. diplomacy. Drawing on all-source intelligence, INR provides value-added independent analysis of events to Department policymakers; ensures that intelligence activities support foreign policy and national security purposes; and serves as the focal point in the Department for ensuring policy review of sensitive counterintelligence and law enforcement activities. The bureau also analyzes geographical and international boundary issues. INR is a member of the U.S. intelligence community.

With regard to INR positions, I gather it is largely a 'civil service' branch; however, are FSOs employed within the INR branch, and, if so, are there sharp distinctions between CS and FSO duties, responsibilities, and career progression within INR?

I realize these are fairly specific questions, but I have had difficulty locating much information about the personnel make-up of INR. Would contacting a 'Diplomat in Residence' by worthwhile?

Thank you for your time.

Yes, FSO's can bid on FS assignments in INR. Whether or not their are sharp distinctions between Civil Service and FSO duties and responsibilities, I don't know. When an FSO bids on an INR position, he/she will have info on what the position entails. Yes, please feel free to contact a Diplomat in Residence.
