I recently graduated from a four year undergraduate program and would like to begin a career with the US Department of State. I do not feel that I have adequate work experience to qualify, yet the internship programs are only offered to current students.

What is the best course of action for someone in my position?

Thank you.

Hi, Cristina.
Most of our Civil Service and Foreign Service Specialist opportunities have specific educational and work experience requirements. However, there are no specific educational or work experience requirements for our Foreign Service Officer positions. If you are worldwide available, you may want to consider a career as a Foreign Service Officer. You can link up to information within the "work" tab at our website. There, click on "Foreign Service Officer."

Have you set up an account on USAJOBS.gov yet?

Go to OPM http://www.opm.gov/HiringReform/Pathways/program/graduates/

and read their Recent Graduates Program: Fact Sheet for information on this new program.

The Department of State is in the process of launching Pathways. Check USAJOBS.Gov frequently (or get an automated email setup) for Civil Service opportunities for Recent Graduates.

Quite a few FS generalists are new college graduates. It can't hurt to apply if you're interested.
