Before my question, I just wanted to thank you guys for such a great resource. This forum is not only a wealth of information, but the responses are timely and very thorough. I really appreciate this forum and the information I've found through it. Keep up the great work!

I was an OMS back in 2007-09 and am in the process of coming back on board. There was "talk" then of there maybe being an RSO-specific OMS position. Is something like this still in the works? Would it be a specifically designated position, or would regular OMSs be eligible for this? I was in an RSO section before and really enjoyed my time.

Thanks for you time!

Are you coming back on board as a "reappointment?" If so, your first assignment will be directed, based on needs of the service. It is possible you may be given a few choices.

If you are not coming in as a reappointment, but rather joining new hire OMS's in an orientation class, you will, during the orientation class, be given a list of vacancies to be filled by the new class. You will be asked to rank-order a specific number of those vacancies. If there are RSO-OMS positions on the list, you (as well as the others)can make that one of your top choices.

Thank you so much for your quick reply. I would be coming in as a new-hire as I was not in for long enough last time to reach tenure. I am aware of the directed assignments and how they work; I was not necessarily asking for myself, but just in general if this RSO-OMS position was still being considered. Any ideas?

Thanks again.

I just double-checked with the OMS Coordinator who advised that there is no specific OMS specialty for OMS-RSO positions. Any OMS can bid on OMS positions. The Coordinator advised, also, that most OMS-RSO positions are at the entry level.

Diplomatic Security Special Agents are the RSOs overseas. hile applications for Diplomatic Security Special Agents are not being accepted at this time, you can view the "now closed" vacancy announcement. To do so, please click here:

If you are interested, you may want to sign up for emailed updates. That way, when the vacancy announcement next reopens for application, you will receive a notification. To do so, click on "Keep Me Informed" at the top of this website.

Hmm.. I was also an OMS until recently and never heard anything about an RSO specific position unless things have changed. If you like RSO you may also like the ESC which is DS too. There are only a few career OMS (vs. EFM) ESC slots in the world I believe, but sometimes they are on the EL list. Hope you get a position you like, in any case!

Lack of Engineering Service Center (ESC) OMS positions available is more due to the lack of ESCs (13) and bidding cycles not lining up than anything else. The current OMS at my ESC is entry-level and is excellent. EFMs typically fill the OMS positions at Engineering Services Offices (ESO) which are smaller posts who may share office space with the Regional Security Office.
