I'm looking for a little more information on the USAID attorney positions that were just advertised on USAJobs. I am registered for the FSOT in June, but I also qualify for the attorney positions. I know the major difference between the two would be that the attorney positions are for the practice of law (as opposed to diplomacy). I'm wondering about how family life would be the same and/or different as a USAID attorney vs. FSO. Are families still able to accompany the USAID attorney, or are the posts all in unaccompanied zones? Are the benefits the same? I'm also wondering how many positions are open, how often/whether attorneys are transferred to different posts, or anything else that differentiates the two positions. Any information would be appreciated.

Hello, Visitor,
As your questions pertain to USAID positions, your best source of info would be USAID directly. Their website is: www.USAID.gov.
In regard to Department of State Foreign Service positions, there is a good deal of info at our website. Also, i if you have questions on State FSO positions specifically, please feel free to send an email to careers@state.gov

I didn't find their website to be nearly as useful as this one with regard to the questions I have, so I was hoping there might be a current employee who hangs out on this forum who could talk about the daily life of a USAID attorney. Thanks anyway.

I saw that announcement too. If you read closely, it says that, after training in DC, the positions would be in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq or Sudan. I wouldn't plan on having kids at any of those posts in the near future. Good luck!

Well, that was one of the reasons I asked. The ad says "Positions will require overseas assignments in developing countries including...Iraq, Afghanistan, South Sudan and Pakistan." I think that leaves open the possiblity of other assignments, but it's vague as to whether it's an exhaustive list.

True. I think the ad lists a contact at USAID who may be able to answer the question.
If you haven't read Career Diplomacy, I recommend taking a look at that too. It has an overview of USAID and addresses some differences between the roles of FSOs in State, USAID, Dept. of Ag. and Dept. of Commerce. You won't find the specific answers to your questions there, but it does explain how the hiring practices, length of assignments and the like differ. It's a useful resource in any event.
Again, best of luck.
