After having invested so much time, money and effort in this procedure and fully expecting to be in Washington next month to start training, I received a form letter today that I have not been granted authorization to work China with no chance of appeal (and a postal letter, probably so that I cannot respond as easily if it were sent by e-mail). A reason for such would have been the least I would have expected out of politeness.
I really don't understand this, since I am not politically active (besides voting and small donations to the mainstream political party of my choice in the US) and have never been involved in politics when studying in China. However, the tone of the form letter leaves me no hope.

Rereading the letter, they wrote that the "State Department has determined that it is unable to grant you authorization to work in China."
This is really weird! I really can't imagine why the State Department would not authorize me to work in China. I can't imagine what criteria they used for this decision. I've studied in China several times, but have not keep up contact with anyone there, so it can't be that. No reasons given and no appeal possible make this all the worse!
I keep thinking this must be a mistake or a cruel hoax, but unfortunately it is real.

Nice to see that I am getting a lot of sympathy here with negative ratings of my post. Nothing like kicking someone when he is down.

That sucks! I can't imagine going through the entire process only to receive a form letter like that. I am hopeful of clearing clearance hurdles myself but am bracing for this exact result.

Stop feeling sorry for yourself. What did you want people to say to you??? "I'm so sorry" really!! That would be a question for the State Department to ask don't you agree? You should be calling them for answers to your letter. I hate to say it, but the way your post reads and in the tone that it reads I am not surprised everyone responded negatively.

Thanks to those of you who wrote kind notes, but I guess it takes all kinds. Of course, I will write to the State Department to ask for the reason and hope they will respond (I only received a letter in the mail with no e-mail address or phone number, just a postal address).
I would imagine that most of us would be depressed after going through this process for months (not to mention years of learning Chinese), think that we were almost there and then get this kind of termination notice without any explanation (at least there are criteria listed for the tests and clearances).
I would have loved to have served our country in a position I am qualified for and worked with many of you whom I met at the test or with whom I exchanged ideas on this blog. Good luck to the rest of you.

You were deemed qualified in terms of education, experience, language ability, deemed not to pose a security risk and were summarily rejected at the final hurdle after months of waiting. if you were not disappointed, i would question your desire for the job. Good luck to you.

Delilah37,
If you were my employee you'd be fired. What a ridiculous comment towards the concerns of this person. Hopefully, your cutthroat tendencies will be revealed before you are ever considered for a post representing the USA.
This will go in your file. Your job performance rating has just been lowered.
I think it was you who gave the post in question a thumbs down. Then you probably logged off and back on a few times to give it more thumbs down - because of your character, which in this case is lacking.
Shape up or ship out.
