Hi everyone...I am just wondering what will happen after 5 years (if I were to be hired as CA)... Can we apply to other jobs during those years? Is it easier to apply to other vacancies while being inside the FS? I am just worried that since it is a Limited Non-Career Appointment, I will be out of a job then, and have to start from scratch again.. Is anyone else worried about this?

CA/LNAs are welcome to apply for other FS positions during their FS assignment(s). If you are offered a position, you may accept. Since you are a U.S.G. employee abroad in the service of your country, you may elect to request that the Registrar freeze your time on the Register, which she can do up to 24 months. That plus your 18 months extends your eligibility, except that you probably would not know if you were to be offered a career position (since it depends on your position on the Register). Your conclusion however that at the end of five years there is no transition to a career position outside of the regular processes is correct.

Having some FS experience could be a benefit in testing for a career position, but it is not a guarantee of success. We have many who have had overseas experience with the FS who have not succeeded in the standard selection process. We encourage candidates to think about the temporary nature of the position. Essentially you need to decide if this position will give you some career experience that will make you a more valuable employee to a new employer. Or will the opportunity to live abroad in a language and culture that you have chosen be sufficient benefit. real

Thanks for the reply to this question. I'd like to know what, if any, employers are interested in Consular Adjudicator experience. What, if anything, can this job lead to in terms of future employment(besides the obvious FS jobs, which the previous reply addresses)? I'd love to hear about people who successfully transitioned into other jobs and what those jobs were.

As this is a new program, and the first group of Consular Adjudicators just left for postings last month, there's no track record. We do have people leave the career Foreign Service to return to the private sector, academia and non-government organizations. Successful government service abroad, combined with language skills and proven cultural adaptability, could make a candidate quite attractive to those seeking such employees.
