Good afternoon, regarding the SPS position; do all prospective SPS candidates who are offered a position attend the same training as Special Agents? What sort of training can prospective SPS candidates expect to undergo once they receive a medical/security clearance and pass a final suitability review? There is very little information on the position and what it entails but it seems like a great position within DSS. Thank you.

No. The SPS is approximately 16 weeks, the Special Agent is approximately 6 months.

SPS work the protective op side of the house. In an AIP post the AIC on a detail could be an SA or an SPS. Any info you find relating to SA protection details will relate to SPS.

Has anyone gone through the experience of "transferring" from the SPS position to the SA career position? I realize the SPS posting has only been in existence for a short time, but I was wondering if anyone out there has made the transition, and if so was it difficult to do so in an AIP post?

There is no formal or expedited process for an SPS to become an SA. An SPS would have to wait for the announcement to open, complete the online assessment, pass the BEX, etc. just like anyone else applying off the street. Of course, the experience as an SPS would likely be beneficial, but the path and the qualifications are the same as if the applicant was not already employed by DSS.

The SPS training is almost 4 months now. Vs. the agents 6 month. Reason being is SPS to not go to FLETC for the criminal investigator course. SPS will not help you get a SA position. It has been seen on this last hiring, where very few SPS got a BEX invite. Reason being, is that they are evaluated with the general public applying. Most agencies will have separate vacancies for positions, this one does not. SPS's conduct high threat protection. They are AIC's in a security detail. The AIP mainly has SPS's as AIC's, and soon will only have SPS's as AIC's. They are similar, but much different jobs. They are both different lifestyles.
