I recently passes the Security Technical Specialist oral assessment. The Information Management Technical Specialist/Radio and Digital positions opened up yesterday.

Could someone give me some info on the difference of these positions. I know the STS position is in the Bureau of Diplomatic Security but I believe the Information Management positions are not.

Which department would be better to work for? Any info on the duties and environment of the postions would help. Which department promotes better?

Just wondering if I should try for the Information Management positions or stay with the STS position. I have background in all three.

Security Technical Specialists work on Diplomatic Security's security systems abroad. Information Management Technical Specialists work on the Department's network, telephone, and radio infrastructure. There is almost no overlap between an STS's and an IMTS's areas of responsibility.

STS have a promotion potential of FS-03. I do not know what the promotion potential is for an IMTS, so perhaps one of my colleagues can shed light on that aspect.

I was on the register for STS and IMTS/R...for me I'm glad I went STS.

But it's a personal decision...it depends on what you want to do and what you're more comfortable with.

STSs top out at FP03. As IMTSs move up the chain, they can convert to IMS and move higher up.

STSs report to the SEO and work in the RSO shop. IMTSs are part of the Management section.
