How old is the Secretary of State? How old are some of the ambassadors? The FS is refusing to use the experience of many people who happen to be over 60. Today's labor force has constantly increased the age people can work for various companies. I think it is a pity that this agency (and perhaps others) consider those over 60 to be __________________

I think it is a mischaracterization to say that the Foreign Service is "refusing" to hire people over 60 years of age. The age restrictions are based upon the mandates of the Foreign Service Act, which can only be changed by Congress. As noted by a Green Check Mark in another thread:
"The maximum age for appointment is based on the requirement that all career candidates shall be able to: (a) complete at least two full tours of duty abroad, exclusive of orientation and training; (b) complete the requisite eligibility period for tenure consideration, and (c) complete the requisite eligibility period to receive retirement benefits before reaching the mandatory retirement age of 65 as prescribed by the Foreign Service Act. (Note: one needs a minimum of 5 years of service in order to have retirement benefits.)"
I would suggest contacting your Senators and Congressperson with this concern.

I'm waiting for the results of my Security Clearance. Passed the Health Clearance. I'm 59, so I won't have my full 18 mo. on the register, but what the hell? Got a good score on my OA--just playing by the rules.

It really depends on you. The only age limit we face is related to the mandatory retirement age of 65. As a result of that limit, Foreign Service generalists and specialists need to enter before age 60 to allow time for tenuring.

There is an exception. For the Foreign Service Diplomatic Security Special Agent position (which is a Foreign Service Specialist position), the applicant must be hired before reaching age 37. Same goes for our Civil Service law enforcement positions.
