I am 57 yrs old Viet Vet. After working in the Financial/Brokerage firms for over 30 years, I would like to leave my desk, and become a Foreign Officer.
I was thinking about the Economics Consular position.
Any ideas how to proceed?

Hi Azeem
I wanted to give you my 2 cents worth about how to proceed :). First you have to take the FSOT test. Under the State Department's website they have a section "careers". Click on this and then the "Foreign Service Officer". It gives you everything you need to get started and you can even take a quiz to see which career track is best for you. There are 5 career tracks: Consular, Economic, Management, Political, and Public Diplomacy. I took the FSOT test and thought it was hard. I'm also not a great test taker. I didn't pass the test and I want to get into a study group but there are none in my area. If you find that where you live that they have one I would join. Of course in the DC area they have one but that is where the headquarters is also. I would not advise that you buy the FSOT study guide because I didn't think it was helpful (but again my 2 cents worth). Await the response from the mentor who can also give you more useful advice. Good luck to you Azeem and I hope all works out for you!

Hi, Azeem,
Thank you for your interest in a career as a Foreign Service Officer.
As mentioned by poster Valeria, there are five career tracks, and info is available at our website to help you determine which career track would be a good fit.
First thing you need to do is register for the Foreign Service Officer Test. You will find the link at our website. The next testing window takes place in June.
At our website you will also find a link to suggestions on how to prepare for the Foreign Service Officer Test. While Valeria may not have found the Study Guide useful, many find it to be a very good resource. There is also a practice test within the Guide to the Foreign Service Selection Process that you can download at our website.
I also suggest that you get in touch with the Diplomat in Residence closest to your location. Diplomats in Residence are senior Foreign Service Officers and key members of our recruitment team. They can offer advice on both Foreign Service and Civil Service careers. You can find the link to the list of Diplomats in Residence and contact info under the "engage" tab at our website.
Good luck to you!
