Testing locations

I am a U.S citizen currently residing abroad.  I was wondering if I could take the FSO test abroad or would I have to travel to the USA for the same. Would the answer be the same both for the written as well as the oral assessment ? I have worked for the county in California for a period of 5 years before which I worked abroad .  Currently I am a full time mom toying with the idea of trying for the Foreign Services sometime over the next few months. Do you have any valuable suggestions and pointers for someone who wants to get back on track after a career break? Would this break hamper my chances ? Also would the local consulates or embassies have any mentors or resources that I could access to prepare myself for the test?
