I applied for an overseas paid internship for Spring 2012. I understand that paid internships are quite limited because of funding. If I do not qualify for a paid internship will I be offered an unpaid internship instead? Should I contact someone and let them know that I am also very interested in an unpaid position? I appreciate any help regarding this matter.
If you do not qualify for a paid internship, you can be considered for an unpaid internship. No need to contact anyone.

In order to qualify for a student internship, one must be, at the time of application, a rising college/university junior, a continuing graduate student, or a rising college/university senior who plans to attend graduate school immediately following an internship. An applicant is considered a junior if he/she will have completed all sophomore credits (60 or more semester hours or 90 quarter hours) by the time the internship begins, and will be entering at least the junior year immediately following completion of the internship.
Law students (second or third year) may apply for law-related student internships with the Department of State. To do so, please apply for a student internship through the normal channels. In addition, please follow the instructions given within the Office of the Legal Adviser section in the Student Internship Information Brochure.
The on line application process for Summer 2012 student internships is expected to begin in September 2011. The application deadline will be November 1, 2011. You may access the on-line application process (Gateway to State) during that timeframe.
The on line application process for Fall 2012 student internships is expected to begin in January 2012. The application deadline will be on/about March 1, 2012. You may access the on-line application process (Gateway to State) during that timeframe.
