I currently have a secret-level clearance, one previously gained as Department of State undergraduate intern. Are there offices that will sponsor a new Top Secret clearance for interns? Or do those offices often just take interns with existing Top Secret clearances?

If selected for an internship, the Department of State will initiate the background investigation process pursuant to the appropriate level of clearance. Offices accept student interns who do not have a clearance at the time of application. The clearance procedure then starts after formal acceptance.
