A Generalist is another term for a Foreign Service Officer. They are termed "Generalists" as there are no specific requirements regarding education or experience (unlike "Specialists" - who need specific certifications, experience, and educational backgrounds for positions such as IT, Medical/Health, etc.)
- What is the difference between a Foreign Service Specialist and a Foreign Service Officer/Generalist?
Both Foreign Service Specialists and Generalists are direct hire career employees of the Department of State.
